I came into the doll world later in life, after many years as a collectibles artist. I was searching for a new artistic outlet when I came to discover the art of doll repainting. As a child, dolls didn't really appeal to me... there was always something I wanted to change about them, whether it be their lipstick color or their eyeshadow or their blank, sometimes vapid expression. I never understood the creative possibilities that were locked inside that "not quite
right" doll. That is until 2011 when I discovered the art of repainting. Suddenly a doll could be anything I wanted, with just the right face, features and expressions. A doll could be brought from a shell of plastic into a magical, lifelike image. Costumes and accessories could be created with a true attention to detail, adding realism and accuracy to characters and celebrity recreations. Using paint, clay and other mixed media, I could breathe life into a statuesque object. It is an omnipotent feeling! Almost without warning, was thoroughly drawn into the fascinating world of dolls.
I live in the picturesque Hudson Valley of New York, where I repaint and customize dolls in my home studio, an hour south of the Tonner corporate headquarters. I primarily focus my repainting on the beautiful dolls created by Robert Tonner and The Tonner Doll Company. I take only a very limited number of commissions each year and commit to creating each doll as a OOAK creation.
